Beauty of Creation - Whitbourn’s Luminosity

Luminosity by James Whitbourn, a new work which fuses voices, instruments and dance, receives its world premiere in Philadelphia Cathedral, Pennsylvania, on April 11.
The 25-minute piece, a meditation on the transcendent beauty of creation, uses a text compiled and edited by the composer and taken from the writings St John, St Teresa of Avila, the Zen Buddhist nun Ryonen, St Augustine, Julian of Norwich and St Isaac of Nineveh. The choir is accompanied by a solo viola and ensemble comprising tanpura, tam-tam and organ.
Luminosity has been conceived to incorporate a visual counterpoint to the music, which in the premiere performance will be created by the black-light dance company Archedream.
The work will be performed by Westminster Williamson Voices; Westminster Schola Cantorum and Blair Academy Singers, with Daniel Stewart, viola, conducted by James Jordan, conductor.
