Following the great acclaim for his award-winning violin concerto witness to a snow miracle , the premiere of Simon Holt’s new percussion concerto a table of noises , is a keenly-awaited event.

This virtuosic piece was written for and in close collaboration with percussionist Colin Currie. The six short movements, with titles such as ‘under glass’ and ‘a drawer full of eyes’, represent aspects of Holt’s memory of his great uncle Ashworth Hutton, an eccentric taxidermist. The title of the piece refers to the fact that the soloist remains seated throughout, selecting instruments from the laden tabletop in front of him.

Colin Currie gives the world premiere of a table of noises with Martyn Brabbins and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra on May 14.
