Tetzlaff plays MacRae
Nick White - Virgin Classics
In 2002 Christian Tetzlaff was the soloist in Stuart MacRae’s Violin Concerto in an acclaimed performance with the Orchestre de Lyon, conducted by David Robertson. For this year’s Edinburgh Festival Tetzlaff made a special request for the composer to write a short surprise encore to follow his lunchtime duet recital with Antje Weithaas at the Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh on August 20th. In response, the composer produced a gem of a work, the Little Sonata for Two Violins:
“Close your eyes, and the violin duo of Christian Tetzlaff and Antje Weithaas sounded like six. That’s largely due to the treasure trove of repertoire for a violin duet that lies hidden, but which this big sounding duo has had the sense to dig out.
We even had an unscheduled world premiere. As an encore, the duo produced Stuart MacRae’s Little Sonata for Two Violins requested especially for the occasion, with the proviso that the Scots composer made it short and faxed it them as quickly possible. MacRae delivered the goods – a super concentrate of the tuneful, richly coloured style he revealed in his recent Violin Concerto. Three movements crammed into two minutes – the icing on the cake.”
- Kenneth Walton, The Scotsman, 21 August 2003
