Husa: Generations

Husa: Generations

Karel Husa coached a special rehearsal of his String Quartet No. 4 (Poems). The first violinist was the composer's granddaughter — Maria Evola. It was the first time Husa heard her perform one of his works as she and her North Carolina Symphony colleagues prepared for an upcoming concert. Evola performed Poems on Husa's own violin — the one that his father bought for him after scraping together the needed money to inspire and encourage the budding teenaged musician. The instrument is a sentimental thing. As Husa passes it on to Evola, he simply notes, "It's how music will live."photo courtesy North Carolina News & Observer: The quartet from left — violist David Marschall, cellist Elizabeth Beilman, violinist So Yun Kim, and violinist Maria Evola.
