The Jerwood Series 1
John Wallace, Trumpet
London Sinfonietta Label
'(...) the most substantial [piece] is Stuart MacRae's Interact, a two-movement trumpet concerto in which the solo instrument encounters different groups within the large ensemble in turn.'
, The Guardian, 3/17/2006
Stuart MacRae’s Interact is ambitious, provocative even, in its technical and expressive range. An often aggressive toccata, solo trumpet engaging in dynamic confrontation with other brass, is followed by a largely static sequence where the trumpet line binds together textures whose sparseness is enriched by the sheer precision of MacRae’s aural imagination. An engrossing piece, made more so through John Wallace’s understated virtuosity.
Richard Whitehouse, The Gramophone, 7/1/2006
Concertante trumpet is dispersed through two movements; the first an exuberant knockabout, the second statuesque yet impassioned. Conducted by HK Gruber (no less!) … music that knows what it wants to do, and how to do it.
Paul Riley, BBC Music Magazine, 8/1/2006
