MacMillan/MacRae: Piano works
Simon Smith, piano
This adventurous disc brings together all MacMillan’s piano music to date, coupled with the substantial Piano Sonata by Stuart macRae, a composer hitherto unknown to me.
...Stuart MacRae’s Piano Sonata (1988) is, as the composer makes clear in his note, as Scottish as much of Macmillan’s work, but its sound is quite different. In this case the work is related to Scottish landscapes - the hills of Cullin of Skye. It is an exciting, rugged and explosive work, with some truly formidable technical difficulties...Smith is an astounding player, with a huge expressive range: both composers are fortunate indeed to have such an advocate.
